BIRTHDAY!!!
The ADVENTURE CYCLING maps have a story on the back about this part of Wisconsin---the title of it is CUMBERLAND, HURLEY, HAYWARD and HELL. The first three, it was said, were tougher than the fourth! We woke up in Cumberland, and we are in Hayward tonight--I think we missed out on Hurley. Cumberland has improved since the lawlessness of the 1800s---we stayed in the RECTORY, a great little B&B next to the church. We even had the local specialty last night, which is ravioli stuffed with cheese and raisins. I never miss the "local delicacy", but if this one comes up again on the route, I'm taking a pass.
We also visited the Cumberland Police Chief, to turn in Koy Carlson's wallet, which I found out on a country bridge. I spent quite some time walking around, collecting all his cards and photos. No money, I'm sad for him to say. He does have a platinum Bank One Visa, though---and a slew of photos of his family. I think he'll be glad to get that stuff back.
There's a link on this page now to "photos" if anyone wants to check out the Giddyup Girlz in motion, and not so much in motion! Kami got her photos loaded and put on a web page during our break at home.
Today is her birthday, and we are in Hayward Wisconsin, at a little coffee shop called BACKROADS. She is having a mocha, and reports that this birthday has been "great". Tomorrow we are heading up and down and up and down, wandering in a circuitous route that eventually takes us to Manitowoc and that ferry across Lake Michigan! We'll shoot for Glidden tomorrow, or maybe a town called Butternut if the wind is in our favor.
