DEVIL'S LAKE, SECOND VERSE

Well, like the Native Americans who couldn't bring themselves to actually cross Devil's Lake (which I think they called Bad Spirit Water, but the white people got "bad spirit" and "devil" mixed up)--- we weren't able to cross it today either. There have been some incredibly violent and persistent storms in this area, and this morning the weather was too severe to venture out by bike or otherwise. It rained several inches, and lightening knocked out the power. Tomorrow's forecast calls for mere "rain showers", so hopefully we'll get to see that Lake on our way to PEKIN ND. Then, maybe HOPE the next day, and lovely FARGO on Saturday. That's if everything goes well!

Meanwhile, we had a nice, if unexpected layover day in Devil's Lake. There's a new bakery in town called KNEADFUL THINGS, and in addition to having wonderful baked goods, they let us hang out this afternoon for a SCRABBLE game which I won hands down. I've been carrying my travel scrabble game and am always happy to break out the 100 tiles and give it a go. We didn't carry a dictionary though---so there was a little brouhaha over the word (?) "cava". I decide the legitimacy of all words except for medical terms, and Kami ruled on "cava" that it wasn't a word. Before I leave this library, I'll have that matter checked out!

There isn't a whole lot to do in Devil's Lake besides play SCRABBLE. There is a museum commemorating a tuberculosis sanitarium, which had several incarnations before and after the sanitarium--none of them good, but somehow that didn't sound like so much fun. If you were a kid, you could do like a lot of the local kids and buy a bunch of fireworks and throw them at girlz on bikes, but that doesn't sound like so much fun, either! I'll be glad when everyone has blown off all their explosives for the season. I don't expect to have computer access for several days as we wind around and through the reservation, but will report from the road when I hit the trifecta of 1)time, 2) energy, and 3)Internet access. So far it's always 3) that gets in my way!
